How do I bring over my saved game from the previous version? I installed this version over the old one, however all I kept getting was black screen and music. I then reinstalled the previous version over the new version and now I don’t have my saved game.

This is REALLY strange. Let me test tonight and figure out what is going on. Are you a windows/linux/mac or Android user?

Hey … awsome work 🙂 i love it

    – are there any language files? because i want to translate it to german 🙂

    – is it possible to safe the game while playing?

    – is it possible to sell items (f.e. a sword), maybe for half price of armory?

I don’t currently have it built out for translation, but this is a great idea. I’ll see if I can find/take all of the strings from the game and create an editable document for translations. Thank you for the offer.

      As far as your questions,

      1. Is it possible to save the game while playing?
      – Currently no. The network library I use (yes, even if you are playing single player it’s actually just a multiplayer game with only 1 player) isn’t well designed to support the ability to restore state in a clean way. One of my long term goals is to replace this networking code with something that allows live save and restore, but it’s probably not something we will have soon.
      2. Is it possible to sell items?
      – Currently no. The base game doesn’t mention this ability so I didn’t add it for the first phase. There are quite a few “house rules” I have considered adding as options, but as of right now, no.

There seems to be a way to duplicate items in the inventory. I happened upon it by accident when I was moving a a healing potion I had just gotten to my wizard. He already had a spare dagger from dying in the previous dungeon and I wanted the potion in the first slot and dagger in the second. When I dragged the dagger onto the potion, I had 2 healing potions in the first 2 slots and a dagger in the third.

For reference, I had just completed the first level and was starting the second (the real first level of HQ – The Trial) and had one each of a potion of strength, defense, and heroic brew plus the aforementioned dagger and enough gold to buy 1 shield and 1 helmet. Everybody otherwise had only their starting weapons.

I reloaded my autosave and after some experimentation, I found that you can do this with anything you can drag to the inventory slots. I made multiple broadswords, helmets, and shields along with numerous potions of defense, strength, and heroic brews this way. Whatever item you drag onto, you’re going to end up with 2 of that item with the item you were dragging placed at the end. It gets a little wonky if I don’t do it with the 2 rightmost items in the line. It duplicates, but erases the rightmost item and replaces it with the dragged item. However, if you do this with the 2 rightmost items each time, you can create items until you run out of space. It does not appear to do this if you are using 2 of the same item. It also does not duplicate if you drag the item to an empty space, it just moves it to the end of the line as I had originally intended to do when I wanted to change the places of the healing potion and dagger.

This isn’t too big a deal if you have the discipline to avoid abusing this. You just have to be careful if you are rearranging your items. I imagine you can do this with artifacts too, but I haven’t gotten to one to test it. When I do, I’ll reply to this to confirm.

Shouldn’t be any surprise, but artifacts duplicate as well. Just made copies of the Talisman of Lore and the Wizard’s Cloak.

I also noticed that when searching for treasure, that any wandering monsters and/or trap cards appear to be shuffled back into the treasure deck as opposed to them being placed at the bottom as instructed on the card.

It makes it a little harder to get those last treasure cards from the deck since they should eventually work their way to the top, but if this is intended I’m good with that too.

The game is based on the American rules set. The American rules state:

… These “bad” treasure Cards ARE returned to the treasure deck and may be re-drawn in the next treasure search. IMPORTANT! The Treasure Cards must be shuffled before a Hero draws one from the deck.

That is the first time I’ve heard of that. My old HQ doesn’t say that…I think…

(Looks it up and finds there was a UK version and a US version. Wonders what version his old HQ is since his cards state to go to the bottom, but is pretty sure it wasn’t a UK version as his parents wouldn’t have bought it from anywhere other than Toys ‘R Us. What if I’ve somehow read it wrong the whole time?)

That would explain the first level. The Maze is a UK level while US started with the The Trial.

Got it. But the cards in the deck of your game state to put them back at the bottom. So now I’m confused. You’ve got the UK level “The Maze” in there, but are using the US ruleset? Don’t mind me though, I’ll just keep in mind that my later treasure searches are not likely to go in my favor once I’ve gotten 8-10 of the treasure cards.

I haven’t thanked you yet for this work. I’ve never gotten to play as the heroes as I always had to run the game and be Zargon back in the day and I expect to do so again with the HasbroPlay reprint.

The shuffle comment is in the game booklet, not on the cards themselves. See https://heroquestbyphoenix.yeoldeinn.com/books/InstBookOriginal.pdf page 16 bottom of the first column and top of the second.

          This is actually something I’ve seen repeated in HQ related forums a few times. Seems counter-intuitive that you would say to put a card on the bottom when you are immediately going to shuffle the deck anyways, but {shrug}

I see it now. It does seem counterproductive to the card’s apparent intent. Guess it’s been a long time since I’ve read the rules eh? This has been good for knocking off the rust when I get back home and run the HasbroPulse reprint for my nephews!

I just finished version 1.0.2 Windows. I noticed the missing Talisman of Lore also, and I realize there is now an updated version, but I thought I’d share some things in case you hadn’t heard about these.

I also saw the duplication bug thing in the gear screen, but I didn’t keep track of any patterns or abuse it. I just exited the game, reopened, and reloaded my last save.

Speaking of saves, is there a way to sort them by timestamp, or quest number maybe? They seem to be all over the place when I reopen the game and load a save and it takes me a few seconds to figure out which was the last save.

I think the Courage spell is working like a Potion of Strength in that it only seems to work for the next attack. I had always thought it continues to work as long as you can see a monster, so if you’re in a room full of monsters Courage should be active until you defeat everything.

I didn’t see the Spell Ring treasure at the end of the final quest. Sometimes there was a message when you defeated a certain monster that had an artifact, but I didn’t see a message like that when I defeated the Witch Lord. I also searched for treasure in that room and the game drew a treasure card.

This is probably a house rule, but it might be nice if the Ring of Return was a once-per-quest item instead of a one-time-only item. There are times when I want to walk back to the exit and make sure I loot every room as much as I can, and there are times when I’ve looted all I want to and I just want to get back and end the quest. If you don’t want to make the Ring of Return a once-per-quest item, would you consider making an option to quit the quest once the mission is successful?

All in all, I love this HeroQuest game. Very nice looking with 3D game miniature images, rolling dice, and drawing cards. I got the hang of disarming traps after a couple of quests. I figured out how the armory worked in between quests, how to rearrange the inventory, share gold, and exploit gear switching in the game. It’s all really fantastic! I hope you continue with it, and make some of the expansions too. 😀

      Fixed in the latest version

Definitely on the list. Maybe I’ll knock this one out in my next pass (next weekend most likely)

This is in line with the way the rules in the US version are written. The card specifically says “The next time that Hero attacks” which is the implementation I used. I am considering adding the “forever until you lose LOS on a monster” house rule (as I think this is more accurate to some locale versions of the game), but it seems awfully overpowered that way.

I didn’t see the Spell Ring treasure at the end of the final quest. Sometimes there was a message when you defeated a certain monster that had an artifact, but I didn’t see a message like that when I defeated the Witch Lord. I also searched for treasure in that room and the game drew a treasure card.
To be perfectly honest, I didn’t implement this. Since you get it at the very end of the currently implemented game, seemed like an unnecessary use of my time (so far).

I have/am trying to come up with a fair rule for “end now” instead of walking back. Maybe if all monsters are discovered and killed? not sure what’s most fair here. I’m against house rules, but walking back to a stairway is not a fun experience.

Thank you 100% for the feedback. I really appreciate it.

        Hello,

I don’t know if this was mentioned but the 1280×1024 works for the game, except the equipment menu which has to be widescreen or you cannot exit out of it so you’re stuck unless you adjust resolution.

A menu option for setting which keys move would be nice, I use arrow keys normally, but I am stuck reaching for the ADWS keys. Also mouse movement instead of keys would be nice, maybe hold right mouse button while moving or middle button for rotation.

Maybe offer a replacement for characters with others like thief instead of wizard etc.

Also I think adding more equipment would be nice to buy or addition the expansion packs etc.

Good work on the game, one of the best I have seen.

Configurable controls will/can certainly be on the list. Now that full functionality exists, being able to focus on these “quality of life” things will certainly be possible.

Expansions to play beyond the US Base are definitely something floating in my mind. 3D scanning a model is 1 thing, but I don’t have the capabilities or time right now to re-model characters/furniture. Depending on the support and amount of money I’m willing to throw at this project, I may look into some higher quality tools including a new 3D scanner that can do a much better job. For now, however, focusing on code (my specialty) over Art/Modeling is likely to be first priority.

      Thank you for the feedback!

I would also like to know what is fixed in the 1.04 release, I haven’t been able to find what bugs are fixed from .03?

Also one way to return hero’s would be to have them complete the quest object like the treasure chests and have them all then return with a click of the button. took forever to get all 4 back. lol

Also it would be nice if you could find a model that would work for Regnar, the game you made has the boardgame feel down great. I think some of the board and furniture could have more contrast in color, they are little brighter, like the contrast is too high or the brightness is. I check my monitor and my settings are 50/50 and work good with all my games. Also another SAFE method of payment is PAYPAL, I would gladly pay some money through paypal, and have the fixed version, I dont use Patreon.

I’m still trying to feel out what is best/fair for those who have gone above and beyond and supported me, so offering the 1 week “early release” seems a reasonable compromise as it doesn’t cost anything but a little time to those that don’t have the means to support me in such a way. (Don’t get me wrong, I love everyone’s support, financial or otherwise, but I think it’s reasonable to look for ways to show my extra appreciation to those that support financially).

This post of 1.0.4 was a test at creating an early release, and as such, I still have things to figure out about how I can allow people to read the articles and just disallow the download. I hope to have this figured out by next pass, however in 1.0.4 specifically I know that I fixed the issues with diagonal attacking being disallowed in some circumstances and also believe I fixed all of the conditions that allowed for “item duplication” in the armory via drag/drop issues.

This next weekend I have a few items on the list I’m planning to look into, so we’ll see which I can get through.

I will look into making a donation Paypal account, as I really appreciate the offer. I don’t really want to expose my personal e-mails (I get a surprising amount of communication on this project already, and keeping it separate in some way is a blessing).

Well thanks for making the game, you did great, I hope you will make the Expansion Packs for the game also? I already finished this one in a couple days on .03. I will play again to test out .04

I think the Expansion should be pretty easy to make since you have the base game down?

The game itself isn’t hard to expand upon. I have been considering making a campaign selector and doing some of my own as an option. The hardest part of the development is when the rules change for something (new spells, new items, modified rules about something in a level like this game loves to do). I do plan to look into it once I feel I’ve got all of the little things cleaned up though.

Ran across this when I was searching for the board game in stores and gave a shot to try to type in “online game” in the google bar. I am super impressed with the work that you’re doing. It’s so true to the original board game, and you have multiplayer support!!! Also, thank you for releasing builds to non-patrons. It gave me a chance to test your game before I decided to support you, but either way, you’ve more than earned yourself a new gold member. I cannot express how happy I am with this. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
